OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) — A security guard who was shot in Oakland earlier this week has died, police said on Saturday.

The security guard was working with TV news station, KRON 4 News, when he was shot during an attempted robbery on November 24, police said.

The shooting victim is identified as retired police officer Kevin Nishita, according to the Alameda County Sheriff’s office.

The Oakland police department told ABC7 News in a written statement:

“This unfortunate loss of life marks the City of Oakland’s 126th life lost to violence. This death is now being investigated by the Oakland Police Department’s Homicide Section.”

The shooting happened on 14th street near Webster.

He was taken to the hospital and was listed in stable condition.

Oakland Police Department Homicide investigators have released a surveillance photo of a vehicle they believe was used in the attempted robbery and shooting of Nishita.

The suspect vehicle is a 2004 – 2008 Acura TL, white, four-door, with a sunroof and no front license plate.

Nishita was an armed guard for Star Protection Agency. He previously worked for the Colma Police department from 2012 until his retirement in 2018.

Before that, he worked for the San Jose police department from 2001 – 2012.

“We are heartbroken and mourning the passing of retired Colma Police Department Sergeant Kevin Nishita. Kevin was part of our San José Police family for eleven years wearing the San José Police patch with great pride.

His contagious smile, passion to serve others, and an unmatched work ethic embodied the best of all of us. As a patrol officer, gang detective, and as a person, Kevin modeled bravery, kindness, and dedication helping make San José a better place for everyone.

We must work together and stay committed to stop senseless violence and the loss of precious life and hold those committing these acts accountable.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Nishita family during this difficult time as we honor Kevin’s memory. Our flags will remain at half-staff until his funeral,” wrote San Jose Police Chief, Anthony Mata.

Local media outlets, including ABC7 News, routinely use security guards to accompany reporters and photographers.

Thieves have targeted news crews for camera equipment.

Investigators are looking for help to find the shooter. Crime Stoppers of Oakland and the Oakland Police Department are offering a $32,500 reward for information leading to an arrest.

ABC7 News would like to express our deepest condolences to Mr. Kevin Nishita and his family as well as our colleagues at KRON-TV, during this very difficult time.
