WASHINGTON, D.C. — Travel to Canada is being discouraged by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which issued an advisory Monday citing the increasing number of coronavirus cases in the country.

The U.S. State Department issued a Level 4 Travel Advisory, advising Americans to not travel to Canada, while the CDC’s advisory warns that Americans should avoid travel. Both advisories say Americans should be fully vaccinated before considering going to Canada, although there still would be a risk.

“Because of the current situation in Canada, even fully vaccinated travelers may be at risk for getting and spreading COVID-19 variants,” the CDC warns.

Canada had more than 327,000 new coronavirus cases in the past week, a record for the country, with 495 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University. The U.S. is averaging more than 586,000 cases per week, according to the CDC. Much of the surge is being blamed on the omicron variant.

The CDC lists about 80 countries at Level 4, including Sweden, France, Finland, Germany, Denmark, Norway, Spain, United Kingdom, and Italy.

Canada reopened its border to fully vaccinated travelers in August, but the U.S. did not open its border to Canadians until November. The countries closed the border to nonessential travel in March 2020.
