Ironically, it appeared that the Steelers’ only score during the first half jump-started the Chiefs’ offense during Sunday night’s wild card playoff game. The Chiefs scored three consecutive touchdowns to take a 21-7 halftime lead following T.J. Watt’s fumble return opened the scoring.

The underdog Steelers struck first when Watt scooped up Darrel Williams’ fumble less than four minutes into the second quarter. The ball came out after a jarring hit by Cam Heyward, as Pittsburgh’s two All-Pros were responsible for the game’s first score. The Chiefs countered with three touchdown passes from Patrick Mahomes, who overcame a slow start that included an interception on Kansas City’s third possession. HIs final touchdown of the half went to Travis Kelce, who had twice as many receiving yards (94) as the Steelers had total yards (44) during the first half.

The Chiefs’ defense dominated the Steelers’ offense during the first half. It was an especially rough first half for Diontae Johnson, whose second drop of the half came in between the Chiefs’ first two scoring drives. Johnson was just a part of the problem, however, as the Steelers’ offense recorded just two first downs while averaging less than 2 yards per play.
