San Francisco 49ers fans are confident their team will emerge with a victory over the Dallas Cowboys this weekend, the opening weekend of the NFL playoffs. Kyle Shanahan’s squad has become a bit of a sexy Wild Card pick.
The Cowboys are favored by three points, and the Niners are the road team. They boarded a Dallas-bound plane after Friday’s practice and enter the matchup with a lot of confidence. The 49ers also could be healthier than they have been all season.
Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is still dealing with a thumb injury, but he delivered a gutsy performance in last weekend’s regular-season finale against the Los Angeles Rams. He’s just one of the reasons why Fox Sports personality Colin Cowherd predicts San Francisco to escape AT&T Stadium with a win.
“I went back and forth [on the pick],” Cowherd said on FS1’s The Herd. “I gotta go with my initial instinct. I’m taking San Francisco and the points and the upset win. Listen, the road team has won 10 of 14 Wild Card games over the last three years. It’s the majority.
“And the offense for San Francisco leads the NFL—huge stat—yards per play, 6.1. The 49ers offense is the hottest it’s been all year. Three of the last four games, 150 yards rushing plus.”
Garoppolo has been a very polarizing player in recent years, with many fans now eager for the 49ers to transition to rookie quarterback Trey Lance. However, Cowherd has a message for Garoppolo’s critics.
“Oh, by the way, all you Jimmy Garoppolo haters, it’s insane,” Cowherd said. “Here are the numbers post-Thanksgiving for Jimmy Garoppolo. Since Week 9, second in the league in completion percentage, first in passing yards per attempt, first in big passing plays.
“Since Thanksgiving, he’s a top-5 clutch quarterback in the league, and the Cowboys are one in five when they’re held under 100 rushing yards, and it’s hard to get to 100 against the Niners defense. I like the Niners to win 28-27. Take the points.”
Report it.

Why Brian Baldinger predicts 49ers beat Rams in Week 18
The San Francisco 49ers hope to extend their winning streak against the Los Angeles Rams to six games on Sunday. A victory would clinch a playoff berth for Kyle Shanahan’s squad. However, a loss paired with a New Orleans Saints win would end its 2021 campaign.
Respected NFL Network analyst Brian Baldinger not only expects the Niners to start quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, but he predicts the 49ers will beat the Rams again.
“I’ve got the 49ers winning 27-24,” Baldinger told 95.7 The Game’s Damon Bruce and Ray Ratto. “… I’m going with the 49ers.”
The home-team Rams are currently 3.5-point favorites in the playoff-impacting Week 18 clash between the NFC West rivals. Yet, Baldinger sounds pretty confident in Shanahan, Garoppolo, and the
49ers-Cowboys: Kyle Shanahan provides injury updates on Trent Williams, Jimmy Garoppolo, Jaquiski Tartt, others
San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan jumped on a conference call with reporters on Monday, one day after his team’s thrilling playoff-clinching 27-24 overtime road win over the Los Angeles Rams. He provided several injury updates.
Trent Williams, tackle
Williams did not play on Sunday. He was inactive due to an elbow injury. Shanahan says Williams will be doing everything he can to play against the Cowboys. However, the coach didn’t sound optimistic that his starting left tackle would practice on Wednesday.
“He wasn’t going to be in good enough shape to protect himself [on Sunday] or the quarterback in the game,” Shanahan said. “That was tough on him, but I think he was as excited as anyone after we won because I know he’s going to
49ers-Cowboys: Jimmy Garoppolo limited, Trent Williams won’t practice, says Kyle Shanahan
Before Wednesday’s practice, San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke with reporters. The team is preparing to face the NFC East champion Dallas Cowboys this weekend in the opening round of the playoffs.
Shanahan says quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, who is still dealing with a right thumb injury, will be limited in practice. However, his starting left tackle, Trent Williams (elbow), will not practice. The coach is still hoping that Williams can play on Sunday against the Cowboys.
“Trent is better today than he was on Sunday,” Shanahan said.
The 49ers are opening the practice window for running back Trenton Cannon, who suffered a concussion on December 5 and was placed on injured reserve on December 11.
