Jimmy Garoppolo‘s play before Thursday night quieted some of the criticisms over the past couple of months. But the San Francisco 49ers quarterback’s performance against the Tennessee Titans has his critics out in full force again. That includes FS1’s very vocal Nick Wright, who argues that the 49ers missed an opportunity to give rookie Trey Lance the valuable in-game experience he may need if called upon in the postseason.

“I am not arguing that Trey Lance should start next week,” Wright told his First Things First co-hosts on Friday. “I am arguing this: He needs to be a part of the game plan. He needs to start to get his feet wetter and more ready because he might need to play in these playoffs because the Niners are in the same boat right now as the Titans, or the Colts, or the Patriots, or the Vikings—teams that two through 53, you really like what they have but, in your heart of hearts, you know, in a big spot, their quarterback cannot be trusted.”

Garoppolo was 26-of-35 passing for 322 yards and a touchdown against the Titans. He also threw two costly interceptions, allowing Tennessee to fight back into the game after trailing by 10 at halftime. The Titans ended up winning 20-17.

Wright lumps Garoppolo in with other quarterbacks like Kirk Cousins and Carson Wentz.

“Those guys are who they are,” Wright noted.

San Francisco traded up to the No. 3 overall pick to select Lance. The rookie has only played 116 snaps compared to Garoppolo’s 843. Most of Lance’s snaps came in Week 4, stepping in for an injured Garoppolo, and Week 5, his only start of the season.

The 49ers moved to add Lance because they knew the offense could only go so far with Garoppolo. However, the veteran remained the starter this season due to Lance’s lack of collegiate experience. His only full season as a starter came in 2019.

“The Niners gave up three first-round picks for Trey Lance for a reason,” Wright continued. “They have to at least get him involved in the game plan. … Jimmy G has never carried the Niners anywhere. Jimmy G was put in Kyle Shanahan’s breast coat pocket and rode along like a little mouse.

“… What I am saying is there is a potential upside with Lance, and maybe he won’t make critical gut-wrenching, looks-like-he’s-looking-the-other-direction throws like Jimmy G did last night.”

Jimmy Garoppolo’s handling of Trey Lance situation has earned him a new level of respect among 49ers teammates

It’s clear that quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo has always had a healthy amount of respect in the San Francisco 49ers’ locker room, but what he’s dealt with this season has increased that respect to a new level.

Garoppolo was put into a challenging situation this season after the 49ers decided to trade up in the 2021 NFL Draft and select their quarterback of the future in Trey Lance. Garoppolo had been the starter for the 49ers since they acquired him in a trade from the New England Patriots in 2017, but injury issues over that time helped, in part, to push the 49ers to add Lance, even though Garoppolo was the quarterback during the team’s Super Bowl run in 2019 and remains under contract through next season.

49ers say Trey Lance has been dicing them up at practice, but Jimmy Garoppolo is undoubtedly the team leader

Trey Lance remains the quarterback of the future for the San Francisco 49ers, but Sunday’s 31-13 win over the Atlanta Falcons showed why Jimmy Garoppolo is still running the show.

Garoppolo produced an efficient performance in the win over the Falcons, throwing for 235 yards on 18-of-23 passing and one touchdown. On top of that, Garoppolo was clearly fired up heading into the game and set a tone for the other players, at least according to fullback Kyle Juszczyk.

“I know today, there was something different about him,” Juszczyk said. “He had this aura about him. Even at breakfast, George [tight end George Kittle] and I looked at each other (and said) ‘Jimmy’s ready to go today.’ I love to see it from him. It’s contagious too, because when we see our head guy like

Breer: Jimmy Garoppolo starting for 49ers in 2022 would be a red flag on Trey Lance’s development

The San Francisco 49ers have always said they were willing to be patient in rookie quarterback Trey Lance’s development, despite trading a haul of future draft capital to move up to the No. 3 overall pick to select him. In year one, the Niners have shown that patience, holding onto Jimmy Garoppolo as the starter and allowing Lance to sit behind the veteran quarterback and learn.

How long does that patience last, though? NBC Sports’ Peter King recently said that the 49ers have not yet decided how to handle their quarterback situation heading into 2022. If true, that would mean that holding onto Garoppolo as the starter remains an option.

John Lynch, 49ers have no second thoughts on trade for Trey Lance

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo has put together a nice string of games over the last couple of months, with his best game, per Pro Football Focus’ grading system, coming on Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons. The team hopes that continues into Thursday night when the Tennessee Titans host the visiting 49ers.

Meanwhile, rookie Trey Lance, the No. 3 overall pick in April’s draft, has played just 116 snaps compared to Garoppolo’s 784. The majority of that limited number came in Week 4 in relief of an injured Garoppolo, and then in Week 5, Lance’s only start of the season. Lance has not attempted a pass since.
