U.S. stocks wavered Wednesday in a choppy session exacerbated by thin trading volumes during the final days of the year.

The S&P 500 fluctuated between small gains and losses and recently added 0.1%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added about 92 points, or 0.3%. That puts the blue-chip index on pace for a new record close and its sixth consecutive session of gains.
