  • The powerful earthquake struck Sunday morning about 100 miles north of the capital of Lima.
  • Three people suffered minor injuries, a local official said.
  • Highways are blocked by fallen stones.

Reports of damage are coming in after a powerful earthquake struck northern Peru early Sunday.

The quake had a preliminary magnitude of 7.5, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It struck at 5:52 a.m. Sunday local time about 26 miles north northwest of the coastal city of Barranca, about 100 miles north of the capital of Lima.

Several highways in the Amazonas and Cajamarca regions were blocked by fallen stones, the Associated Press reported.

A 400-year-old church lost its 45-foot-tall tower in the quake, according to AP.

Mayor Walter Culqui told Peru’s RPP radio that three people were injured slightly.

The tower, part of one of the oldest Catholic complex in the region, was reduced to a pile of stones, according to online videos and photos.

A church in Ecuador also was damaged, AP reported.
