At least that appears to be the case after legendary D.C. quarterback Joe Theismann seemingly tipped the name change Monday during an interview with CBS Sports’ Damon Amendolara.

“I think the Commanders is a name that is going to be one that hopefully people like going forward. … There were so many different options, but once again it’s trademark infringement, it’s getting approval from different people. If you choose a name, is there a group out there that isn’t going to like it? There’s so many things that you’ve to to consider. Commander, basically, it’s Washington, D.C. A lot of commanders in Washington D.C. and the Pentagon, and a lot of different branches of the service. So to me, that’s the way I’m looking at it, as positions of leadership when it comes to the new name.”

However after the interview, Theismann, the 1983 NFL MVP who led Washington to victory in Super Bowl XVII, contacted the Washington Times’ Matthew Paras to walk back his radio interview.

Just got this text from Joe Theismann: “Not completely sure what the new name. No one has told me. Like you I’ll find out on Wednesday.”

Theismann isn’t just a football legend in D.C. He was born in New Brunswick, went to South River High School, and was inducted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame in 2011.

As for the Washington Football Team, it will officially unveil the new name on Wednesday. The team retired the “Redskins” moniker before the 2020 season.
