The Giants are finally getting outside of their comfort zone. The team interviewed only one true external candidate (ESPN analyst Louis Riddick) during its last general manager search in 2017. With former Giants general manager Ernie Accorsi serving as a consultant, that search was hardly exhaustive. The team quickly landed on Dave Gettleman, who had spent 15 years in the organization before leaving for a four-year stint as Panthers GM.
Gettleman’s disastrous four-year Giants tenure ended with his “retirement” on Monday. The Giants are trying to avoid making a similar mistake with their next hire, so Accorsi is not serving as a consultant and no internal candidates are being interviewed.
The Giants have submitted requests to interview nine candidates with no GM experience and no real ties to the franchise. Eight of the nine candidates currently work for playoff teams, but interviews will begin this week. The first round of interviews will be virtual, with finalists likely meeting with ownership in person next week. A new GM could be in place within a week.
The Giants will be motivated to proceed quickly because their head-coaching search won’t commence until they hire a GM. Meanwhile, other teams with head-coaching vacancies will be interviewing the top candidates. The Bears and Vikings are the only other teams with openings at head coach and GM.
Here’s a closer look at the nine candidates to replace Gettleman:
