TAMPA, Fla. — The Giants lost again Monday night, this time a 30-10 blowout at the Buccaneers. They’re now 3-7 with seven games left.
So let’s take a look at where they’re projected to pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. (And keep in mind, this draft order obviously will change in the coming weeks.)
Their own first-round pick is No. 5 right now. They also have the No. 7 pick, from the Bears, who also are 3-7.
The Giants are currently projected to have three picks in the top 39 (including their second-rounder) and five in the top 72 (including their two third-rounders). That extra third-rounder came from the Dolphins, who are 4-7.
The Giants on Monday gained just 215 yards, their fewest of the season and second-fewest under second-year offensive coordinator Jason Garrett.
And they did that against a Bucs defense that entered Monday 18th in Pro Football Focus’ ratings. The Giants entered Monday 27th in PFF’s offensive ratings.
At 3-7, the Giants are off to yet another slow start, as they’re now 18-40 under fourth-year general manager Dave Gettleman, who probably will be fired after the season, at this rate.
In 2018, the Giants started 1-7 and then 3-8 — and finished 5-11. In 2019, they started 2-11 and finished 4-12. Last season, they started 0-5 and then 1-7 — and finished 6-10. This season, they started 1-5 and then won two of three games entering their bye week — but weren’t able to build on that Monday night.
So it sure looks like they’re heading for multiple high picks in the 2022 draft, since the Bears — losers of five straight — are spiraling as well.
Here’s the current top 10 of the draft, via Tankathon:
1. Lions, 0-9-1
2. Jets, 2-8
3. Jaguars, 2-8
4. Texans, 2-8
5. Giants, 3-7
6. Jets (from Seahawks, 3-7)
7. Giants (from Bears, 3-7)
8. Eagles (from Dolphins, 4-7)
9. Falcons, 4-6
10. Washington, 4-6
